The taco is an indigenous Mexican food and was in existence before the European arrival in the New World.  The word itself is Spanish and refers to a plug filling up a hole.  It's designed as a convenience food and typically eaten by hand without utensiils.  It usually consists of a corn or flour tortilla filled with various foods and folded or rolled after being filled.  Fillings can include but are not limited to meat, avocado, seafood, vegetables and cilantro. 

Tacos gained popularity in the early 20th century.  The most common form is the heard shell version that was written about in 1949.  Over time they have found their way onto the menus of restaurants and fast food chains across the country.  In addition to hard shell tacos, there is also soft tacos typically made with flour tortillas.  There are other variatons of tacos including puffy tacos where the raw dough is fried in hot oil until it expands and looks "puffy".  Tacos are so popular they are eaten for breakfast filled with eggs, meat and other ingredients.  Currently, most retail stores sell kits that allow consumers to prepare the treat at home.
